Mississippi (MS) is also known as the Magnolia State. The name Mississippi comes from an Indian word meaning "Father of Waters". The date of admission to the Union was on December 10, 1817 out of Mississippi Territory. It is the 20th state to joining the other constituent entities. The lowest place is Gulf of Mexico, which is below sea level. Its geographic center can be found in Leake County, 9 miles west northwest of Carthage. Mississippi is bordered by the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee.
