Kyrgyzstan is often referred to as Kyrgyz Republic or simply Kyrgyzstan. The locals also call the country Kyrgyz Respublikasy or Kyrgyzstan for short. A combination of the Turkic words "kyrg" (forty) and "-yz" (tribes) with the Persian suffix "-stan" (country) creating the meaning "Land of the forty tribes"; the name refers to the forty clans united by the legendary Kyrgyz hero, MANAS. The country's flag has the colors red, yellow.

The country of Kyrgyzstan lies 41 00 north and 75 00 east. The region has a total area of 199,951 sq km with a land coverage of 191,801 sq km. About 8,150 sq km is covered with water. Kyrgyzstan has a total border length of 4,573 km and is bordered by the following 4 countries: China 1,063 km, Kazakhstan 1,212 km, Tajikistan 984 km, Uzbekistan 1,314 km. The lowest point is Kara-Daryya (Karadar'ya) 132 m below sea level and the highest is Jengish Chokusu (Pik Pobedy) 7,439 m. Its mean elevation is about 2,988 m. Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan and can be found 42 52 N, 74 36 E.
Population and life in Kyrgyzstan
In July 2016 Kyrgyzstan had a population of 5,727,553 people. In 2015, 35.7% of the population lived in cities. The annual growth rate of urbanization is 1.58%. The residents of the country are called Kyrgyzstani(s). The Kyrgyzstani population has a median age of 26.2 years. The median age for males in 2016 was 25.2 years, and 27.3 years for females. The estimated growth rate of the Kyrgyzstani population in 2016 was 1.09%. Looking at life expectancy, the Kyrgyzstani people live an average of 70.7 years (males 66.5 years, females 75.1 years). Statistically, Kyrgyzstani women give birth to 2.64 children in their lifetime.
