Syria is often referred to as Syrian Arab Republic or simply Syria. The locals also call the country Al Jumhuriyah al Arabiyah as Suriyah or Suriyah for short. Name ultimately derived from the ancient Assyrians who dominated northern Mesopotamia, but whose reach also extended westward to the Levant; over time, the name came to be associated more with the western area. The lowest point is unnamed location near Lake Tiberias -200 m below sea level and the highest is Mount Hermon 2,814 m. Its mean elevation is about 514 m. Damascus is the capital of Syria and can be found 33 30 N, 36 18 E.

In July 2016 Syria had a population of 17,185,170 people. In 2015, 57.7% of the population lived in cities. The annual growth rate of urbanization is 1.37%. The residents of the country are called Syrian(s). The Syrian population has a median age of 24.1 years. The median age for males in 2016 was 23.7 years, and 24.6 years for females. The estimated growth rate of the Syrian population in 2016 was 1.56%. Looking at life expectancy, the Syrian people live an average of 74.9 years (males 72.5 years, females 77.4 years). Statistically, Syrian women give birth to 2.55 children in their lifetime.
Syria and its economy
The estimated gross domestic product in 2015 was about $55.8 billion (2014 est.), with a growth rate of -9.9% compared to 2014 (GPD 2014: $61.9 billion (2013 est.), growth rate -36.5%; GPD 2013: $97.5 billion (2012 est.), growth rate -30.9%). Electricity and internet infrastructure in Syria
Only 96% (1.6 million) of the people living in Syria had full access to electricity in 2013 (rural population: 81%; urban population: 100%). Among those 30% (July 2015 est.) or 5.116 million Syrians, had access to an internet connection.
