Gabon is often referred to as Gabonese Republic or simply Gabon. The locals also call the country Republique Gabonaise or Gabon for short. Name originates from the Portuguese word "gabao" meaning "cloak," which is roughly the shape that the early explorers gave to the estuary of the Komo River by the capital of Libreville. In July 2016 Gabon had a population of 1738541people. In 2015, 87.2% of the population lived in cities. The annual growth rate of urbanization is 2.7%. The residents of the country are called Gabonese (singular and plural). The Gabonese population has a median age of 18.6 years. The median age for males in 2016 was 18.4 years, and 18.8 years for females. The estimated growth rate of the Gabonese population in 2016 was 1.92%. Looking at life expectancy, the Gabonese people live an average of 52.1 years (males 51.6 years, females 52.5 years). Statistically, Gabonese women give birth to 4.43 children in their lifetime.
