The name is derived from Guiana, the original name for the region that included British Guiana, Dutch Guiana, and French Guiana; ultimately the word is derived from an indigenous Amerindian language and means "land of many waters" (referring to the area's multitude of rivers and streams). In July 2016 Guyana had a population of 735909people. In 2015, 28.6% of the population lived in cities. The annual growth rate of urbanization is 0.76%. The residents of the country are called Guyanese (singular and plural). The Guyanese population has a median age of 25.8 years. The median age for males in 2016 was 25.5 years, and 26.2 years for females. The estimated growth rate of the Guyanese population in 2016 was 0.17%. Looking at life expectancy, the Guyanese people live an average of 68.4 years (males 65.4 years, females 71.5 years). Statistically, Guyanese women give birth to 2.04 children in their lifetime.
