Kenya is often referred to as Republic of Kenya or simply Kenya. The locals also call the country Republic of Kenya/Jamhuri ya Kenya or Kenya for short. Etymolgy: named for Mount Kenya; the meaning of the name is unclear but may derive from the Kikuyu, Embu, and Kamba words "kirinyaga," "kirenyaa," and "kiinyaa" - all of which mean "God's resting place". The country's flag has the colors black, red, green, white.

The country of Kenya lies 1 00 north and 38 00 east. The region has a total area of 580,367 sq km with a land coverage of 569,140 sq km. About 11,227 sq km is covered with water. Kenya has a total border length of 3,457 km and is bordered by the following 5 countries: Ethiopia 867 km, Somalia 684 km, South Sudan 317 km, Tanzania 775 km, Uganda 814 km. The lowest point is Indian Ocean 0 m below sea level and the highest is Mount Kenya 5,199 m. Its mean elevation is about 762 m. Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and can be found 1 17 S, 36 49 E.

In July 2016 Kenya had a population of 46790758people. In 2015, 25.6% of the population lived in cities. The annual growth rate of urbanization is 4.34%. The residents of the country are called Kenyan(s). The Kenyan population has a median age of 19.5 years. The median age for males in 2016 was 19.4 years, and 19.6 years for females. The estimated growth rate of the Kenyan population in 2016 was 1.81%. Looking at life expectancy, the Kenyan people live an average of 64 years (males 62.6 years, females 65.5 years). Statistically, Kenyan women give birth to 3.14 children in their lifetime.

Only 20% (35.4 million) of the people living in Kenya had full access to electricity in 2013 (rural population: 7%; urban population: 60%). Among those 45.6% (July 2015 est.) or 20.952 million Kenyans, had access to an internet connection.
