The country name derives from the ancient Greek appellation "Erythra Thalassa" meaning Red Sea, which is the major water body bordering the country. The country of Eritrea lies 15 00 north and 39 00 east. The region has a total area of 117,600 sq km with a land coverage of 101,000 sq km. About 16,600 sq km is covered with water. Eritrea has a total border length of 1,840 km and is bordered by the following 3 countries: Djibouti 125 km, Ethiopia 1,033 km, Sudan 682 km. The lowest point is near Kulul within the Danakil Depression -75 m below sea level and the highest is Soira 3,018 m. Its mean elevation is about 853 m. Asmara (Asmera) is the capital of Eritrea and can be found 15 20 N, 38 56 E.

In July 2016 Eritrea had a population of 5,869,869 people. In 2015, 22.6% of the population lived in cities. The annual growth rate of urbanization is 5.11%. The residents of the country are called Eritrean(s). The Eritrean population has a median age of 19.4 years. The median age for males in 2016 was 19 years, and 19.9 years for females. The estimated growth rate of the Eritrean population in 2016 was 0.81%. Looking at life expectancy, the Eritrean people live an average of 64.9 years (males 62.4 years, females 67.5 years). Statistically, Eritrean women give birth to 4.07 children in their lifetime.

Only 32% (4.3 million) of the people living in Eritrea had full access to electricity in 2013 (rural population: 17%; urban population: 86%). Among those 1.1% (July 2015 est.) or 71000 Eritreans, had access to an internet connection.
