Uzbekistan is often referred to as Republic of Uzbekistan or simply Uzbekistan. The locals also call the country O'zbekiston Respublikasi or O'zbekiston for short. A combination of the Turkic words "uz" (self) and "bek" (master) with the Persian suffix "-stan" (country) to give the meaning "Land of the free". Uzbekistan has a total border length of 6,893 km and is bordered by the following 5 countries: Afghanistan 144 km, Kazakhstan 2,330 km, Kyrgyzstan 1,314 km, Tajikistan 1,312 km, Turkmenistan 1,793 km. The lowest point is Sariqamish Kuli -12 m below sea level and the highest is Adelunga Toghi 4,301 m. Its mean elevation is about not known. Tashkent (Toshkent) is the capital of Uzbekistan and can be found 41 19 N, 69 15 E.

In July 2016 Uzbekistan had a population of 29,473,614 people. In 2015, 36.4% of the population lived in cities. The annual growth rate of urbanization is 1.45%. The residents of the country are called Uzbekistani. The Uzbekistani population has a median age of 28.1 years. The median age for males in 2016 was 27.6 years, and 28.7 years for females. The estimated growth rate of the Uzbekistani population in 2016 was 0.93%. Looking at life expectancy, the Uzbekistani people live an average of 73.8 years (males 70.7 years, females 77 years). Statistically, Uzbekistani women give birth to 1.78 children in their lifetime.
