The country of Costa Rica lies 10 00 north and 84 00 west. The region has a total area of 51,100 sq km with a land coverage of 51,060 sq km. About 40 sq km is covered with water. Costa Rica has a total border lenght of 661 km and is bordered by the following 2 countries: Nicaragua 313 km, Panama 348 km. The lowest point is Pacific Ocean 0 m below sea level and the highest is Cerro Chirripo 3,810 m. Its mean elevation is about 746 m. San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica and can be found 9 56 N, 84 05 W.

Population and life in Costa Rica

In July 2016 Costa Rica had a population of 4,872,543 people. In 2015, 76.8% of the population lived in cities. The annual growth rate of urbanization is 2.74%. The residents of the country are called Costa Rican(s). The Costa Rican population has a median age of 30.9 years. The median age for males in 2016 was 30.4 years, and 31.3 years for females. The estimated growth rate of the Costa Rican population in 2016 was 1.19%. Looking at life expectancy, the Costa Rican people live an average of 78.6 years (males 75.9 years, females 81.4 years). Statistically, Costa Rican women give birth to 1.9 children in their lifetime.

The estimated gross domestic product in 2015 was about $74.89 billion, with a growth rate of 3.7% compared to 2014 (GPD 2014: $72.23 billion, growth rate 3%; GPD 2013: $70.15 billion, growth rate 1.8%). The economic sectors of Costa Rica are: agriculture: 6%, industry: 19.7% and services: 74.3% (2015 est.). The country's economy is known for: medical equipment, food processing, textiles and clothing, construction materials, fertilizer, plastic products.

Electricity and internet infrastructure in Costa Rica

Only 99,5% (24,362) of the people living in Costa Rica had full access to electricity in 2013 (rural population: 98,3%; urban population: 99,9%). Among those 59.8% (July 2015 est.) or 2.877 million Costa Ricans, had access to an internet connection.
