The history of US State of Maine (ME)

Maine (ME) is also known as the Pine Tree State. The name Maine is first used to distinguish the mainland from the offshore islands. It has been considered a compliment to Henrietta Maria, queen of Charles I of England. She was said to have owned the province of Mayne in France.. The date of admission to the Union was on March 15, 1820 out of Massachusetts (District of Maine). It is the 23rd state to joining the other constituent entities. The motto of the state is: Dirigo (I lead).

The total size of this US State is about 35,384 square miles. Therefore Maine ranks in 39th place among all other US States in terms of land area. Actually 30,841 square miles are covered by land and 4,543 square miles are covered by water. The mean elevation is 600 feet. Maine's highest point is Mt. Katahdin with a height of 5,267 feet. The lowest place is Atlantic Ocean, which is below sea level. Its geographic center can be found in Piscataquis County, 18 miles north of Dover-Foxcroft. Maine is bordered by the following states: New Hampshire.
