North Carolina (NC) is also known as the Tar Heel State. The name North Carolina is in honor of Charles I of England. The date of admission to the Union was on November 21, 1789 out of Crown Colony of North Carolina. It is the 12th state to joining the other constituent entities. The motto of the state is: Esse quam videri (To be rather than to seem).

The total size of this US State is about 53,819 square miles. Therefore North Carolina ranks in 28th place among all other US States in terms of land area. Actually 48,619 square miles are covered by land and 5,2 square miles are covered by water. The mean elevation is 700 feet. North Carolina's highest point is Mt. Mitchell with a height of 6,684 feet. The lowest place is Atlantic Ocean, which is below sea level. Its geographic center can be found in Chatham County, 10 miles northwest of Sanford. North Carolina is bordered by the following states: Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia.

In 2015, 10,042,802 people lived in North Carolina. The majority of people do not live in the capital Raleigh. They live in the largest city Charlotte. The residents are called North Carolinian. North Carolina is the birthplace of these presidents: Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767 in Waxhaws Region (In office March 4, 1829 – March 4, 1837), James K. Polk was born on November 2, 1795 in Pineville (In office March 4, 1845 – March 4, 1849), Andrew Johnson was born on December 29, 1808 in Raleigh (In office April 15, 1865 – March 4, 1869).
