Kansas (KS) is also known as the Sunflower State; Jayhawk State. The name Kansas comes from a Sioux word meaning "people of the south wind". The date of admission to the Union was on January 29, 1861 out of Kansas Territory (part). It is the 34th state to joining the other constituent entities. The motto of the state is: Ad astra per aspera (To the stars through difficulties).

The lowest place is Verdigris River, which is 679 feet. Its geographic center can be found in Barton County, 15 miles northeast of Great Bend. Kansas is bordered by the following states: Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma.
