The history of US State of Kentucky (KY)

Kentucky (KY) is also known as the Bluegrass State. The name Kentucky comes from an Iroquoian word "Ken-tah-ten" meaning "land of tomorrow". The date of admission to the Union was on June 1, 1792 out of Virginia (District of Kentucky: Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln counties). It is the 15th state to joining the other constituent entities. The motto of the state is: United we stand, divided we fall.

The total size of this US State is about 40,411 square miles. Therefore Kentucky ranks in 37th place among all other US States in terms of land area. Actually 39,492 square miles are covered by land and 919 square miles are covered by water. The mean elevation is 750 feet. Kentucky's highest point is Black Mountain with a height of 4,139 feet. The lowest place is Mississippi River, which is 257 feet. Its geographic center can be found in Marion County, 3 miles north-northwest of Lebanon. Kentucky is bordered by the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia.

In 2015, 4,425,092 people lived in Kentucky. The majority of people do not live in the capital Frankfort. They live in the largest city Louisville. The residents are called Kentuckian. Kentucky is the birthplace of these presidents: Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Sinking spring (In office March 4, 1861 – April 15, 1865).

The Research Triangle Park in North Carolina (the world's largest) and the Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Alabama (the world's fourth largest) are located in the American South.

Most of the biggest US companies are based in Atlanta and the neighboring area. These companies include The Coca-Cola Company, The Home Depot, Delta Air Lines and also some of cable television networks, such as the Turner Broadcasting System (CNN, TBS, TNT, Turner South, Cartoon Network), and The Weather Channel.

Because of the low company tax burden and the low cost of living, many companies have are based in the South. Nowadays the majority of Fortune 500 companies are based in this region. That's why the South has some of the lowest unemployment rates in the United States.
