Jordan is often referred to as Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan or simply Jordan. The locals also call the country Al Mamlakah al Urduniyah al Hashimiyah or Al Urdun for short. Named for the Jordan River, which makes up part of Jordan's northwest border. The country's flag has the colors black, white, green, red.

Geographic facts about Jordan

The country of Jordan lies 31 00 north and 36 00 east. The region has a total area of 89,342 sq km with a land coverage of 88,802 sq km. About 540 sq km is covered with water. Jordan has a total border lenght of 1,744 km and is bordered by the following 5 countries: Iraq 179 km, Israel 307 km, Saudi Arabia 731 km, Syria 379 km, West Bank 148 km. The lowest point is Dead Sea -408 m below sea level and the highest is Jabal Umm ad Dami 1,854 m. Its mean elevation is about 812 m. Amman is the capital of Jordan and can be found 31 57 N, 35 56 E.

In July 2016 Jordan had a population of 8185384people. In 2015, 83.7% of the population lived in cities. The annual growth rate of urbanization is 3.79%. The residents of the country are called Jordanian(s). The Jordanian population has a median age of 22.3 years. The median age for males in 2016 was 21.9 years, and 22.7 years for females. The estimated growth rate of the Jordanian population in 2016 was 0.83%. Looking at life expectancy, the Jordanian people live an average of 74.6 years (males 73.2 years, females 76.1 years). Statistically, Jordanian women give birth to 3.18 children in their lifetime.

The estimated gross domestic product in 2015 was about $82.73 billion, with a growth rate of 2.5% compared to 2014 (GPD 2014: $80.71 billion, growth rate 3.1%; GPD 2013: $78.28 billion, growth rate 2.8%). The economic sectors of Jordan are: agriculture: 3.8%, industry: 29.9% and services: 66.3% (2015 est.). The country's economy is known for: tourism, information technology, clothing, fertilizers, potash, phosphate mining, pharmaceuticals, petroleum refining, cement, inorganic chemicals, light manufacturing.

Electricity and internet infrastructure in Jordan

Only 99,5% (40,926) of the people living in Jordan had full access to electricity in 2012 (rural population: 99,4%; urban population: 99%). Among those 53.4% (July 2015 est.) or 4.335 million Jordanians, had access to an internet connection.
