Michigan (MI) is also known as the Wolverine State. The name Michigan comes from Indian word "Michigana" meaning "great or large lake". The date of admission to the Union was on January 26, 1837 out of Michigan Territory. It is the 26th state to joining the other constituent entities. The motto of the state is: Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice (If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you).

The total size of this US State is about 96,713 square miles. Therefore Michigan ranks in 11th place among all other US States in terms of land area. Actually 56,528 square miles are covered by land and 40,185 square miles are covered by water. The mean elevation is 900 feet. Michigan's highest point is Mt. Arvon with a height of 1,979 feet. The lowest place is Lake Erie, which is 572 feet. Its geographic center can be found in Wexford County, 5 miles north-northwest of Cadillac. Michigan is bordered by the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota (water border), Ohio, Wisconsin.
